I enjoyed reading these three books ages ago, and should probably list them all for a re-read. Except House of Leaves, as I am pretty exclusively ebooks (ugh, I know, in your piece about paperback vs hardback) and you really can’t read HoL in any format but paper. But mostly I am commenting to recommend the album Haunted by Poe, who is the sister of.. is it Mark Z Danielewski? It is like a companion piece to the novel and I found it really powerful to experience them together when I was a precocious 20-something year old.

Kat this is an incredible piece of trivia that I was completely unaware of.

I hoped you would enjoy it. I recommend next going to Poe’s Wikipedia page and finding out what happened to her after that album, which was that she got screwed royally by the record labels and hasn’t released any since 2000. But somewhere down the rabbit hole I went on after I left this comment, I also found a tidbit where her brother ripped apart his manuscript for some other story and she took the pieces out of the dumpster and taped them together over two weeks. She was also instrumental in his getting this book published. I find their familial relationship so interesting, based on the unique art they create.

I feel like We Have Always Lived in the Castle is about them. What a family! I think I read once that he mostly sketched out HoL on a bus on the way to his dad’s funeral but I’m possibly making that up.
